During a
major disaster, critical services such as fire, public works and ambulance
services will be overwhelmed. It may be 72 hours before help can arrive!
This course will prepare you to help not only yourself and your family, but
others in your community as well. West Contra Costa Adult Education in
conjunction with the Richmond Fire Department Office of Emergency Services
will provide you with the REACT/CERT course in disaster preparedness for
home, neighborhood, and workplace. In the absence of professional emergency
response agencies, you, as a “first responder” in the immediate aftermath of
a disaster, will be able to: organize a neighborhood team; know when it is
safe and how to shut off utilities; safely handle, contain and/or avoid
hazardous materials around the home, workplace and roadways; identify
structural damage and safety risks; assess and triage injuries and
administer basic disaster medicine; identify types of fires and extinguish
them; conduct light search and rescue; lift heavy objects to rescue people
by “cribbing.” After the completion of the five-day (two and ½ hour classes
each day) course, class will meet again on Saturday, from 8:00am-2:00pm for
a hands-on disaster training session, including using fire extinguishers
(held on October 24, 2009 at a location to be determined prior to 10/24/09).
Advance registration is required.
